Five grounding techniques for anxious moments

Dr. Susan O. Bamidele October 10, 2026

When anxiety rises, your body needs to know it is safe. These simple techniques can help you return to the present moment.

1. The 5-4-3-2-1 method

Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell and 1 you can taste.

2. Box breathing

Breathe in for four, hold for four, out for four, rest for four. Try it in our Quiet Corner.

3. Feet on the floor

Press your feet into the ground and notice the support beneath you.

4. Name it to tame it

Say quietly: "I am feeling anxious, and it will pass."

5. Reach out

You don't have to manage alone. A conversation can change everything.
